Welcome to the Charlotte Aitken Writer's Studio and Production Suite at An Tobar and Mull Theatre—two inspiring, purpose-designed spaces generously supported by the Charlotte Aitken Trust.
Both spaces are available to use free of charge.
Charlotte Aitken Writer’s Studio
Step into a welcoming sanctuary crafted especially for writers. The Writer's Studio provides a peaceful, dedicated space to nurture creativity and inspiration. Whether you are crafting a novel, drafting a screenplay, or exploring poetry, you'll find this environment perfect for creative contemplation and productivity.

A beautifully bespoke mural inspired by the birdsong of Mull, providing an evocative backdrop to your creativity.

The Writer's Studio welcomes writers at any stage of their career—from absolute beginners to seasoned professionals.
Booking Information:
The studio has four desks available, bookable in half-day slots (morning: 10 am – 1 pm, afternoon: 1 pm – 4 pm). Desks are free to use and can be booked up to one month in advance, with block bookings limited to five consecutive days.

Charlotte Aitken Production Suite
The Charlotte Aitken Production Suite offers creatives access to state-of-the-art audio recording facilities, ideal for projects in radio, multimedia storytelling, podcasts, sound design, film editing and music.
Located in the former head masters office, the studio is a dedicated space equipped with tools and technology for creating, editing, and finalising various forms of digital art, video, digital imagining and audio. The studio offers a space for recording, mixing, and mastering audio, as well as facilities for video editing, colour grading, image manipulation and visual effects. It serves as a hub for artists and creators to bring their visions to life, using professional-grade equipment and software within a collaborative environment.
Audio Recording and Mixing
The Studio offers facilities for recording voice, instruments and foley sounds.
Audio and music software for sound design and post-production.
Recording, mixing and mastering music tracks, as well as creating soundscapes for performances or installations. Software includes Logic Pro, Ableton, MAX and various plugins together with vintage and reproduction hardware including analogue synths and outboard processors.
We have portable setups for podcasting, enabling up to 4 contributors and live mobile phone hookups.
Aspiring DJs can use our DJ setups with Trakor Software and a Trakor 3 control surface. We also offer a more traditional setup with decks and a mixer if vinyl is your thing.
A huge collection of professional off and online sound effects are available for enhancing productions.
We also offer an archive of analogue and redundant digital equipment for digitising and encoding include reel to reel, cassette tape, DAT, mini disc and VHS
Control Room & Performance Space
The Studio can be used as a control room connecting to An Tobar's wonderful Performance space via a super fast Danté digital audio network or can be configured to use a more traditional analogue snake.The Performance room has it's own special unique sound, live performances can be captured with multi track sessions. Live sessions from the Production studio can also be sent in the other direction utilising the Performance rooms PA and projection facilities.
Video Editing and Post-Production
We offer video Premier Pro editing software with colour grading tools.
Digital Art
Creating animations, image editing & correction, visual effects and interactive installations using Adobe’s Creative Cloud Apps.
Expert Technical Support
We can offer assistance with equipment setup, troubleshooting, and software guidance.
